We won't have Holy attacks, but Thage throws both Dark and Fire magic. In this case, the status screen shows their resistances, which are important to us - normal resistances to air, water, and earth, very resistant to Darkness, not so resistant to Fire and Holy. The Demon Auras are special auras that only one type of attack can break - sometimes slashing, sometimes fire, et cetera. We're faced with four demons, three that look like humanoid insects in Egyptian costume, "Caprus" - and one jet black "Caprus" demon with a Demon Aura. The mechanics of battle are on a grid - the scene a mossy ruin surrounded by trees. I've played this game enough, dammit! "Hmmph," Raki replies. I will instruct you in the basics of battle." Asked to view the tutorial, I say no. The scene ends and we are dropped immediately into the prologue. And no game-breaking translation errors! (*cough*NISAmerica*cough*) Perhaps catering to their audience, it 'works' for me and is, for whatever you may feel about the game itself, an excellent localization. I rather like that they kept this Japanese touch. In this case, when Atlus USA localized the game, they could have called them 'demons' or anything like that. Majin, or 魔神 - is a japanese word for a devil or an evil spirit. Thage mutters something about "filthy Majin" and opens up the glowing purple book. The other monster moves to her while the horrified girl she is protecting looks onward. She stands very still, having no intention of even flinching for this thing - Raki the antlered wolf, now glowing with a blue flame, moves with blinding speed and knocks one away. "Hold it right there," Thage says.Īnother monster appears. Majin"Ī huge, vaguely Egyptian monster looks to menace a sad looking blonde girl with some circular tablet. She opens a book - The Librum - and says "It looks like we've found it" She holds her hand up and her hand glows. The opening begins with an FMV showing a spooky young blonde woman and her pet wolf walking up to a stone door. There is a video of the prologue here on youtube: It's easy to turn off, however, and we do right away. Worse, with the animations on, it gives you battle results in the middle of it, so if you skip forward, you might miss a counter or something even worse. I am guessing that having to cut through these animations, each of which take time to load up, was one of the major reasons American fans gave up on this game. The reason for this is, Flight-Plan decided to have long cutscene animation attacks for every single move you make during the 'tactics' phase of the game. We immediately choose Options, leaving everything at the default save for one very important setting, "Animations", which we turn off. There are two options - "Prologue" and "Options". The screen shows the main characters, along with Ranunculus the weird wolf. We're dumped in the opening screen to a lovely opening screen with operatic singing and piano music. Atlus USA gave it the more generic "Eternal Poison" with their release here.

The game was written by Flight-Plan, a Japanese company best known for their "Summon Night" series of games (now I think out for the DS if you can find it) - they released this game as Poison Pink, (in katakana, literally po-ee-son peenku) a name that probably sounds awesome and Western and spooky to the Japanese. hack series, so there's gonna be a loooot of walls 'o text. There's only one thing: I couldn't get an emulator to work with EP so I can't cap screenshots like Topher did with his excellent Let's Play of the. So.I guess I'll take a stab at showing VGO why I adore this series.

The story's awesome, spooky, and full of interesting surprises.

Also, due to a number of stupid decisions by the design team, it's one of those games you could play for a few hours, get frustrated/annoyed with, and never pick it up again. It came out to less-than awesome reviews right at the end of the the lifetime of the ps2, and so was likely duly missed. Eternal Poison is a grindy, flawed Japanese strategy RPG with a gothic flair.
